We are committed to creating a physical and virtual artistic space in which to engage in an open dialogue that promotes healing of survivors through the arts and furthers awareness and understanding of sexual violence. We do this by producing year-round art events and opportunities spanning every medium, including visual art, literature, music theater and performance art that are made by, for and about survivors of sexual violence.

Awakenings is an arts organization dedicated to making visible the artistic expression of survivors of sexual violence. We currently help survivors heal through art by providing year-round programming at our gallery space in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago.

Through showcasing survivor art, our programming provides a safe space and supportive community for survivors who wish to share their stories, and also educates the public about the reality of sexual assault through rotating art exhibits, a digital literary magazine, concerts, and other performances.

Awakenings offers an eye-opening experience by providing a window into what it’s like to endure this kind of trauma. Cultivating an audience is crucial to the survivors we serve, because doing so proves the world wants to hear their stories and educates the public about the reality of sexual violence.

We are growing rapidly and want to spread the word, expand our community, and widen and innovate the resources we offer survivors to keep up with the changing landscape of survivor advocacy and public education surrounding sexual assault.
